I incorporated the letter “A” into my logo design as a monogram of my first name, but also to honor my immediate family (my seven siblings also have names that begin with A). This design merges inkwell & quill, honoring old-style writing, respecting past art. In the ideation phase, I created the frame by frame “written out” animation of my name in a mid-century casual brush script, which may still get used. My brand colors hearken to limited color palette printing conventions of the early to mid 20th century.
Casual Brush Script Logo Redesign
After completing the original vector of the brush script logo, I noticed some inconsistencies in the stroke weights and also that the weights did correspond to the thick and thin strokes that would be present if you were to paint this with an actual sable brush. After diving into some excellent resources (specifically Ken Barber’s House Industries Lettering Manual and Jessica Hische’s In Progress) I discovered several areas I could improve. Below you can see the multiple iterations. I ultimately decided on the script “E” for the lowercase letters of the logo in honor of my father. It hearkens to his signature which was always stylistic and meticulously consistent. He was my first art teacher and the first champion of my artistic drive. Thanks, Dad.
